RFID Tags: Passive, Active And Hybrid

Posted by: Owen Jones  :  Category: Hard Drives

All RFID tags are used to hold and ultimately send data. They can best be thought of as the replacement for the bar code. However, they have significant advantages over bar codes. For example: RFID tags can hold much more data than bar codes; they can be read from further away and they can in point of fact send information, not only store data.

There are three kinds of RFID tags: passive, active and hybrid. Passive RFID tags are the least expensive, because they are less complex. They have to be asked to disclose their information by taking power from an RFID reader. When the reader’s radio waves hit them, they echo back their information. This is the sort of tag used in goods in a retail outlet or on crates in a warehouse.

On the other hand, active RFID tags have a battery, a transmitter and an aerial so that they are always transmitting. These units are clearly a lot more expensive and so are used only on more expensive items like a container, a battle tank, an aircraft, on criminals ankle bands or on an animal of an endangered species.

The hybrid RFID tag is capable of transmitting, but it has to be told to transmit; it has to be turned on by a signal. This signal could be a satellite flying over head. These hybrid RFID tags are also costly, but the battery lasts longer because they are not ‘always on’. These tags have the same uses as the active tags, but are suitable for use where it is not vital to know where something is every minute of the day: for instance cows in a field or goats on a mountain.

Passive tags can be attached permanently by sewing them into hems or putting them under skin because they do not have their own electricity source and do not wear out. This is a cause of anxiety to some people who worry about an invasion of their privacy or the erosion of their human rights.

Active and hybrid tags are most frequently plainly visible so that the batteries can be changed as and when required. If this is going to be unlikely to take place, as in the case of wild animals, the tag can have a biodegradable clasp which will break sometime after the probable expiry of the battery.

Some uses for RFID tags are on season tickets so that the holder can pass through the style more quickly than a customer paying by cash. It has applications in security; most of the ID badges you see pinned to shirts have RFID built into them so that security guards do not have to stop and question everybody.

They can be put into wagons that repeatedly cross frontiers so that they do not have to stop for identification. They can be put on windscreens so that, as you pass through a motorway toll post, either your credit card is billed or the charge is added to your company’s monthly statement.

Hospitals utilize them on patients so that they do not misplace anyone or misidentify them. RFID tags are useful in our daily lives but people are concerned about criminals being able to read all this information too easily as well.

Extending Hard Drive Life

Posted by: Christopher Keith  :  Category: Hard Drives

Hard drive fragmentation occurs when files are broken up and stored on various locations of the Hard Drive. Often files are written and stored unbroken, but as they are added to, the additional parts are merely placed on the next available space on the hard drive. Many times these files are deleted leaving gaps in the data that is stored on the disk. When another file is stored on the drive, it is broken into pieces and stored in the gaps left by the old file. When situations like these arise, the hard drive must do extra work to connect all the pieces of the file. This will cause undue stress and wear on the hard drive’s parts. This problem is remedied however by defragmenting the hard drive.

The first step to defragmenting is to clean up the hard drive. If a file needs to be deleted, it should be deleted and have time and energy on its fragmentation. Eventually, when these files are deleted, their absence will lead to further fragmentation. The most popular way to clean a disk is select the properties of the volume in an explorer window or disk management. On the general tab, there is a button for disk cleanup. The system will perform a quick analysis and respond with a list of options that may be chosen to free space on the drive. The options are to delete files in various locations or possible to compress old files. After the choices are made, the user chooses to “clean up system files.” Sometimes after this is done, an additional tab will appear to offer to remove old programs and all but the last restore point. These options may harm required functionality of computer should not be considered by the novice.

The second way is select the properties of the drive in disk management or an explorer window. On the general tab, there is a button for disk cleanup. After a quick analysis, the program will respond with a screen that the user may check boxes of what actions should be performed. Sometimes the option is given to compress old files, but mostly the options are to delete files in various locations. The user must then select the button labeled “clean up system files.” Some copies of Windows will include an additional tab where old programs may be removed and all but the most recent restore point be deleted. These additional options are potentially dangerous and may harm required functionality of computer.

A user may also explore the drive and manually delete files one by one. This deletes files that would be missed by the automated process. This method is a great way to perform simple housekeeping but, it is important to understand that the automated process will often delete files that the user would never likely find. This method is labor intensive, but is often as important as the automated methods. Users often accumulate clutter that they felt important at the time, but has long outlived its usefulness.

Now that the disk has been properly cleaned, it is best to defragment the hard drive. This may be accomplished in two ways. The first is to select the properties of the drive, click on the tools tab, and then select the button labeled “defragment now.” This will open another window. The user should select the disk, analyze it, and if advised to do, defragment the disk. The appearance of the window will vary by operating system, but the operation is very similar for all windows operating systems. In some operating systems, it is possible to schedule the a job to defragment the hard drives here as well. If not, then it is required to use the command “defrag.exe” to defragment the hard drive. The command may be used in conjunction with the task scheduler to occur on a specified schedule. It is important that when running disk clean up or defragmenting a disk to not use the computer as it may lead to unresolved fragmentation. Running regular disk clean up and defrags will extend the life of almost any disk. However, solid state drives have only a limited number of read/writes. It is a bad idea to waste read/writes by defragmenting the hard drive. Also solid state drives have no moving parts to wear down.

You can watch me while I reduce hard drive fragmentation.

Printer Technology Has Evolved To Allow Personal Design Works For Casual Designers

Posted by: Bill Locksmith  :  Category: Hard Drives

Today, small businesses have had access to newer, more advanced but cheaper technology. This has helped them reduce the prices of printed materials.

It no longer requires a big time printing firm to be the only one doing brochures for a customer. This is because lately, there have been new improvements in terms of printer technology. These have driven the costs down such that even individuals can use them for printing designs to customers.

A more expensive route will require a larger business outfit to contract a different business to do the designing and layout of the brochures before any printing is done.

The high prices charged by those companies is however understandable. You should however not view them as the only providers when it comes to printing brochures. It is not always that you will have the war chest required to finance such a deal. You can follow cheaper strategies.

There are smaller businesses or individuals who can do the work for you at a smaller payment. Many of these businesses are just startups or were formally garage or living room businesses. This is good for you because they understand the issues relating to a thin budget and you are likely to strike a better deal than a more established firm would give you.

The secret these days is to let the gifted artists in other businesses to do the designing, then after that, you could have the design carried in a file to your place, where you will print it using your own machine. This is cheaper because these days, doing a color print is not as expensive as it was a while back.

Another more manual approach calls for the person to get a brochure design application and get cracking immediately. It can be tough at first but with a little instruction from the manual, you will be printing out after a few trials.

With all these options, you surely cannot fail to get brochures ready for circulation. Settle for materials that will market your small business without having to leave your office.

Communication And Stock Control Using RFID

Posted by: Owen Jones  :  Category: Hard Drives

RFID is the acknowledged acronym for Radio Frequency IDentification. The core of RFID technology is that every RFID chip or tag is capable of emitting a radio signal on a frequency totally unique to itself.

Therefore, every RFID tag must have its own identifying frequency and the RFID tag readers must be sensitive enough to be able to distinguish between frequencies that are only a very minute bit different from its neighbouring tags. The disparity can be microscopic.

Therefore, the technology needs to be sensitive and selective, but not delicate, because the apparatus has to be used on the shop floor and by people who are often pushed for time and in weather that may be bad.

In order for RFID to have the desired result, you have to have a tag, which is an upmarket sort of bar code and a radio receiver, often called a (tag) reader. However, whereas a bar code can only hold a small quantity of information and the bar code reader has to be pointed at it, an RFID tag can hold much more data and can be read from a hundred yards or more - even out of line of sight.

Passive tags will only divulge their details when asked to by a reader, whereas an active tag is constantly broadcasting its contents. Clearly, active RFID tags are more expensive than passive tags, because they have to have a long life battery.

These tags can be utilized to track goods from the moment they leave the manufacturer of the items they describe to the in-bay of the vendor. The tags can then be up-dated or renewed and put in the warehouse. Once there, RFID readers can keep management up to date about what goods are where and if the sell-by-date is approaching.

This has ramifications for the levels of stock that a business needs to hold, the amount of goods sold cheap because the sell-by-date is too near and for theft, all of which should boost company profits more than funding the cost of the tags, the readers, the printers and the programmes.

At the click of a mouse, managers will be able to read how much inventory they have in real time and if this is all connected to the checkout cash registers, which are the most and least profitable articles. This makes reordering easy . Easy to the point of computerization. For example, when stocks of the top ten percent of the best selling items falls below 1,000 order 10,000 more. Automatically, no questions asked.

RFID has many other applications too. The ideas mentioned above can be applied to farm animals, a call centre’s IT hardware, a fleet of commercial vehicles, an record of household items, your pets, your car and even your garden furniture. Some people who work over a border are even having them put under their skin so that they do not have to wait at customs.

And bear in mind that criminals on early discharge are also tagged. It is the same technology.

Owen Jones, the author of this piece writes on quite a few topics, but is currently concerned with the RFID asset management. If you would like to know more, please go to our website at Active RFID Management.

When those printing jobs need to get out fast, and must maintain the quality that is required, it is nice to know there is the Dell 5110CN Printer. This powerful, high volume, duplex laser printer provides distinguished printing at speeds of 35ppm for Dell Color Laser 5110cn cartridges, and 40ppm for B&W. Combined with robust paper handling features and double-sided production, this printer offers excellence on a level above the rest.

There are many reasons why a business might need a variety of connection features, and this printer allows the standard Ethernet and parallel ports, as well as USB 2.0. One of the benefits of this unit is the management software called, Dell’s Color Trak Management Tool. It offers the ability to reduce costs by controlling Dell cartridges levels and user access by configuring network traffic for work groups, or even down to the individual user.

The Many Features Of Samsung Laser Printers

Posted by: Stan Retner  :  Category: Hard Drives

Samsung Laser Printers are a family of printers with many different combinations of features. They are made by the largest electronics company in the world, Samsung Electronics, which is an affiliate of the Samsung Group, the dominant corporation of South Korea. Following is a summary of the features of the printers in this family.

There are two basic kinds of laser printers produced by Samsung. One is called a multifunction printer. The other is just called a printer. Of course, they all print. The multifunction printers also have the ability to scan and copy, and some can also perform fax functions. Models that support faxing include modems. They can also work with faxes sent or received by an associated PC.

You have a choice of printers that print in color or in black and white. The number of colors printed is huge. If you frequently print photographs or other documents that need color, than a color printer is for you. On the other hand, you can save money by going black and white. You can still print photographs, just not in color. Multifunction black and white printers scan in color.

Printers can use wired connections, or they can be wireless. The wireless ones provide the One Touch Wi-Fi Button. This feature provides easy connection to a wifi network. Wireless printers can be placed anywhere that your wifi router can reach. PCs using your wifi network can easily print. Printers that don’t have wifi will have either USB or Ethernet, or both.

Some printers feature duplex printing. This gives the user the option to automatically print a document using both sides of the paper. This is a great cost saving and tree saving function as it reduces the paper requirements of larger jobs by up to half.

The AnyWeb Print feature and the ESP Easy Screen Print Button are featured on some of the printers. These allow you to combine screen data and web page data into a single printable screen. These screens can be saved as files.

Many of the printers are designed for individual usage, but some are more intended to be shared among many users in an office environment. They tend to be faster with more storage. They also have built in tools to support their management in this more complex setup.

There is a rather large complement of Samsung Laser Printers. It would seem like there is something for everyone here. Unfortunately, not all possible combinations of features are available. For example, there doesn’t seem to be a wireless printer that does duplex printing. Samsung does seem to have most of the more desirable combinations in their repertoire.
