Ethernet Port Adapters

Posted by: Jim Witt  :  Category: Routers

Local Area Networks are computer networks that can be set up in the work place or in your own home. Networks that are connected to the Internet use a technology called Ethernet. This technology allows the Internet to be sent directly to your own private computer with a few simple connections.

Most people associate the word Ethernet with Ethernet chords. These are the most common equipment used with Ethernet. The Ethernet chords are used to connect computers to network devices, network devices to modems, or network devices to other network devices.

Having the Internet will require you to have at least one Ethernet cord if not more. The cord gets plugged into the Ethernet outlet also known as the Ethernet port. Most computers and network devices have an Ethernet port.

Sometimes computer don’t have Ethernet ports but not very often. This usually only occurs when the computer is really old. There are some new computer that doesn’t have these ports but they are traditionally the really cheap ones that come with hardly any extra drives and outlets.

You may run into a problem with your Ethernet port not working. This could be caused by improper use like jamming cords into it. Sometimes these ports become loose or have broken wiring, which causes them to malfunction.

Before you pay a lot of money to have this port fixed, think about another option. There are USB Ethernet adapters available at great prices. As long as your computer has a USB drive, you will be able to use one of these adapters without having to worry about a port.

A problem you may run into with USB adapters is finding one that fits with your computer. Adapters for PCs are very common but if you have a Mac you may have to search around. You also may end up spending more on a Mac compatible adapter because they aren’t as common.

An Ethernet adapter will fit into any USB outlet. Once it’s plugged in all you need to do is get your Ethernet cord and plug it in. There’s usually little to no installation for these adapters, which makes them really easy to use.

Identifying Category Cables

Posted by: Jim Witt  :  Category: Routers

There are many cables out there that may look very similar. You might think they can work interchangeably but in reality they cannot. They are classified by different categories, which identify what they are used for. Here we will give a basic review on category cables and what they do.

The category 1 cables are sometimes mistaken as real cables when they really aren’t. They aren’t used anymore but when they were they were used for simple things like doorbells. Some people know them by the name voice-grade copper.

The category 2 cables are known as cat-2. These are also not used today and aren’t really recognized as cables either. They were used to send data at speeds up to 4 Mbit/s.

Starting with category 3 cables, we start getting into the recognized cables that are used today. Category 3 cables include a bandwidth of 16 MHz and can transmit data with speeds up to 10 Mbit/s. These cables were used for computer networks before the invention of the category 5 cable a little over a decade ago.

Cat 4 cables were short lived as the cat 5 cable wasn’t far behind. The cat 4 cables had a bandwidth of 20 MHz and carried data at a speed of 16 Mbit/sec. They were mainly used in token ring networks.

A category 5 cable is the most popular cable used today. It is what we plug into our Ethernet ports also known as Ethernet chords. It has bandwidth of 100 MHz and a speed of 100 Mbit/sec. Ethernet ports are outlets that accept only RJ-45 cable ends which are the ends on the cat 5 cables. If your cable doesn’t fit into the Ethernet port you know it’s not the right one.

There are some cat 6 and cat 7 cables that have an even greater bandwidth and speed. These are also used for Ethernet purposes and can be used in place of a cat 5 cable. The cat 6 and cat 7 cables are also better insulated which really improve the interference through the lines.

All of this information can be confusing but there are a couple things you should make sure you know. Cat-5 cables are really the most commonly used in our day and can be interchanged with cat-6 and cat-7 cables. Don’t try and use a different cable because you could really mess your Ethernet port up. These cables are used to allow us to access the Internet and exchange large amounts of data across the network.

Fixing A Broken Ethernet Chord

Posted by: Jim Witt  :  Category: Routers

Many people in our society cannot function without daily use of the internet. Consequently the demand for internet services is extremely high. There are many parts that are used when connecting to the internet and an Ethernet cord is the key to making it all happen.

Ethernet chords play a key role in connecting your computer to the internet. They send the signal from one Ethernet Port to another allowing multiple computers to go online. When your internet is first set up, you will probably be given an Ethernet cord from the internet company.

Most the time these chords can be identified by their true blue color. They also have two cables on each end to connect to Ethernet Ports. These cable ends are called RJ-45 connectors.

The name RJ-45 stands for Registered Jack 45. It is a specific size of jack used especially for computer network cables. Never try and use another size cable for your network or you may end up breaking your Ethernet Ports. Size it up to the Ethernet Port before trying to plug it in if you’re not sure.

Breaking your cord isn’t as big of a deal as breaking the outlet. The cord can usually be fixed in just a few simple steps. You will first need to get rid of the damaged part of the Ethernet cord. If it’s the actual cord, you can simply cut it away. If it’s the cable end, you will have to find a replacement with another RJ-45.

After the damaged parts are taken care of, you can start fixing your cord. You want to strip each open cable end which means you want the blue casing taken off. This will expose the wires underneath which will need to be organized into this order: Brown, Brown/White, Orange, Blue/White, Blue, Orange/White, Green, and last Green/White.

Now that the wires are in order, you will want to neatly plug them into their appropriate spots on the jack end. Do it carefully so that you don’t damage the wires. Once correctly placed, clamp the cord so that the wires don’t come loose.

Fixing your own Ethernet cord will save you from having to buy another one. It’s a great way to recycle old chords as well. It may take some time to go through this the first time, but once you get it down you’re set.

The Different Types Of Internet

Posted by: Jim Witt  :  Category: Routers

Connecting to the Internet is pretty simple especially with all the technology we have today. There are a lot of different ways to connect and each way has its benefits and downsides. Make sure you know what you want to get out of your Internet connection before you choose a type of connection.

The first mainstream Internet connection was dial-up or Analog. Dial-up is where the Internet is accessed through your phone lines. The downside is that it takes up your phone line and is pretty slow. On the other hand, it is one of the cheapest Internet connections if that’s something you’re looking for.

DSL is another type of Internet connection. DSL is much more popular than Analog because it is quicker and doesn’t tie up your phone line. You don’t have to dial into the connection, which makes it always readily available.

Many people also use Cable Internet too. Cable Internet uses cable lines to connect using your cable modem as the main hook up. Cable Internet offers much quicker speeds because of its large bandwidth.

The newest and most popular form of Internet today is wireless Internet. Wireless Internet is sent over radio waves allowing you to access Internet anywhere within the range. Some people think it is less reliable, but the demand for wireless Internet continues to grow.

Wireless Internet connects similarly to Cable Internet. You do need to hook into the wall for the main connection and then you’ll need to hook up your wireless router. If you have a computer network you may be using a hub or switch to link your computers. If you don’t have a hub or switch your router can function as a hub. Using a router then allows your wireless signal to be transmitted throughout your house. A wireless router will cost some money, but most people find it well worth it.

Most basic forms of Internet are available in almost any populated area. Make sure you check into what’s available where you live as your options may become limited. Once you know what’s out there, you can then decide what best fits your needs.

When deciding on an Internet connection, make sure you know what you want. Make a list of your priorities and figure out which connection fits best. There are so many options out there that you are sure to get what you’re looking for.

Large Computer Networks

Posted by: Jim Witt  :  Category: Routers

Many companies use the same computer network for all their computers. This makes things easier as they can share files and printers. Setting up this big of a network can be tricky, but with the right know how you’ll be able to get it done.

The first thing you want to know is what kind of a network you want to create. You can have a network run off of a switch, hub, or wireless router. We will explain how you can set up a network with all three of these devices.

If you want a wireless network, you will need a wireless router. You will also need a wireless Internet provider. Wireless networks are becoming really popular because they are easy to set up and provide better security.

Once the wireless router is installed, you can add as many laptops to it as you want. If you want to hook a desktop computer up you will need cables connecting to the router. To expand the network you can simply hook a hub or switch to your router to allow for more computers.

Using a switch to connect your network will require network cables. These cables will connect your computers to the switch. Once, you’ve used up all the outlets on the switch you will need another switch to add additional computers.

When working with hubs, you will have to be careful about how away you place them. Using a crossover cable you can place the hubs about 100 meters apart before your signal starts to fade. This is also the same for switches.

Computer networks can be as big as you want as long as you have enough network devices. The problems you might run into with such large networks are mainly security issues and network overloads. If you are experiencing an overload consider setting up two separate networks. Security issues can be resolved easily with proper software.

A large computer network can be a benefit to a lot of large companies. It is pretty easy to set up whether you’re using a router, hub, or switch. Make sure you understand what you’re doing beforehand so you don’t end up wasting time and money.

Turning Your Cell Phone Into A Modem

Posted by: Angel Chodie  :  Category: Routers

Cell phones have become a huge part of our world today. Many people don’t even use them to communicate anymore. With internet plans available through your cell plan, cell phones have become miniature computers for their owner to use.

A cell phone can even be used as a modem or router to connect other devices to the internet. It can be a tricky setup, but it really can work. It is called tethering and some cell phone companies don’t allow it, or require specific plans in order to “tether.”

If you do want to use tethering with your phone, there are a couple things you will need to take care of. First, make sure you have an appropriate device, such as a laptop to connect to. It’s really convenient to connect with a laptop which is why many people use them.

You will need some way to connect your phone to the other device. This is usually a USB chord or can even be linked through blue tooth. Many data phones will come with this chord or you can purchase one from any cell phone store.

The steps in setting up your mini network are pretty simple. First hook your device up to your cell phone/modem/router. Then, make sure you have the right software installed to your computer. That’s really all that you need to do in order to create your modem. The modem can also be seen as a router, but remember that this doesn’t mean it has the same security as a router.

Make sure you have the correct phone type for tethering. A data compatible phone will work as well as smartphones and other phones that can browse the internet. You need to have the right cell phone plan that includes a data plan and sometimes a separate tethering plan.

When you’re setting your cell phone up as a modem, you will need to connect it to the other device. Once, it’s connected you will also need special software installed from your carrier. Your cell phone will in a way also serve as a network router for your mini network. However, routers provide security that isn’t provided through your cell phone.

Tethering can be pretty expensive even with T-mobile. Make sure you are aware of all that it entails before you jump in. If you know what you’re doing and have the money to sustain it, then tethering can really be a great benefit.

Router Connections

Posted by: Jim Witt  :  Category: Routers

Networks are set up to accommodate multiple computers and their connections to the internet. A router run network can handle a pretty good amount of traffic before it gets bogged down. We’ll talk about the connection limits networks have and how to keep your networks up and running.

The number of connections that a router can handle will depend on the quality. The best router will let you have up to 253 connections. This doesn’t mean that your network won’t slow down because it will. It just means that there are 253 connections allowed.

A connection is a pretty easy concept for those who don’t know what one is. Anything that needs to load on a page or browser is a single connection. Pictures, videos, instant messages are all examples of single connections.

It’s important to understand that a single webpage may count as multiple connections. It will obviously have its dot com to load, but it may also have a video or image on the page that requires loading as well. Sometimes the majority of the connections come from internet ads. Each ad can count as a single connection.

Networks are made to handle multiple computers but the more computers on the network means more total connections. Too many computers may cause “bottlenecking” which is basically an overload of connections. If you only have a couple computers on your network, you will probably never encounter this.

Having a bottleneck in your network can be frustrating, but there are easy ways to prevent and fix it. If you want to solve the problem for good you will need either a better router or an additional one. Sometimes, you simply need to create another network in order to handle all the connections that are being made.

If you don’t want to take these steps, then you will have to focus on limiting the connections that go through your network. Do this by closing out of browses and windows that aren’t needed. Turn off computers that are running idly and just be aware of how much loading really is going on.

Most people don’t experience network problems from too many connections. Those who do can usually solve it with a few simple tricks. Networks are meant to handle multiple connections and if you are fairly organized with these connections, you won’t have to worry.

Reliability In Network Switches

Posted by: Jim Witt  :  Category: Routers

The world of businesses has had some revolutionary tools created recently that really help boost their efficiency. One of these tools is a network switch. There are many other tools that aid in business development, but we will be reviewing network switches in this article.

A network switch can be explained in very complex terms that many people don’t understand. In simple terms, it is basically a device that creates a computer network. The computer network makes it possible for every computer on it to be able to share files and run off of one printer, copier, fax machine, etc.

There are other ways to create a computer network, but a switch is one of the most efficient. Since it was created in 1990, it has evolved into a very reliable device. Reliability is one reason people choose switches over hubs. Hubs are pretty basic and encounter many problems.

Another benefit to using a network switch is its speed. The way a switch processes information allows it to run much quicker than its counterpart, hub. It receives and sends files without the usual collision that a hub encounters.

There are a couple different kinds of switches. There are unmanaged switches which are as their name states “unmanaged.” It comes already configured and ready to use. This makes it a popular option for home networks. A downside to unmanaged switches is their network capacity.

There are also benefits to getting an unmanaged switch. They have more network capacity making it useful for larger companies or networks. They also have the ability to be configured to your own liking.

The invention of wireless networking has had some impact on switch run networks or wired networks. Wireless provides a desirable alternative as the installation and setup is much quicker and easier. It is growing in popularity among many businesses, but still has many flaws and bugs to work out.

While some may see the network switch slowly being driven out, it is likely that it will stick around for some time now. Compared to a wireless network, switches create networks that are still more reliable and quicker than any wireless network. This makes a big difference for many people.

Smart Phones

Posted by: Jim Witt  :  Category: Routers

In the past few years, the industry for smart phones has really boomed. They have created infinite opportunities with all their different applications, downloads, and tools that are available. Smart phones are much more than just a phone; they function as a camera, computer, schedule, fax machine, and can even be a wireless router.

The invention of the Smart Phone started all the way back in 1992 with IBM’s Simon. Its features were pretty advanced for its day including a calendar, email, fax, address book, etc. While this may seem very basic compared to what our smart phones are today, it laid the foundation that allowed the market to move forward.

The smart phone of today has so many features you can’t even list them all. The most advanced features include but are not limited to a touch screen, advanced Internet browsing, web applications, and software compatibility. The invention of the phone applications has been the most recent trend for the smart phone as it allows for a whole new world of improvement.

The applications available to smart phones have become really popular just within the last year. Apple launched the App Store along with their second-generation iPhone in 2008. Android uses the Android market for their applications and BlackBerry has their BlackBerry App World. There is also OviWorld offered by Nokia, Palm App Catalog by Palm, and Windows Marketplace for Mobile by Microsoft.

Applications aren’t always free. There are usually a select number of free apps that you can add to your phone along with numerous paid apps for various prices. There are applications for all kinds of things including GPS locators, barcode price comparisons, phone books, games, and basically anything you might want.

The wireless router app is something fairly new to the world of cell phones. It basically allows your phone to act as a router sending the Internet to other devices like your laptop. While this can be expensive, it may just be the future for wireless browsing.

One thing to be aware of with smart phones is the expense that can accrue fairly quickly. With a phone plan, data plan, texting, applications costs, and other expenses you will need to make sure you monitor exactly what you’re paying for. With a smart phone, there are many ways to spend money if you’re not careful.

Smart phones are definitely the newest trend in the world of technology. They are a complete all in one, which makes them useful for basically anyone. It will cost some money, but most people see them as a worthwhile investment.
