Some Tips for Preventing Laptop Theft

Posted by: Andrew Verte  :  Category: Computer Support

According to a study released by the Ponemon Institute, business travelers lose a staggering 12,000 laptops each week at airports by their count. According to a survey by the FBI, 97% are never recovered.

This number is even more shocking when you consider that 65 percent of survey respondents indicated they were carrying confidential information - and they weren’t taking any measures to protect that information. This is a lot of sensitive, unprotected information that may be up for grabs because someone got careless in the waiting area of an airport.

The following prevention and mitigation tips for laptop and data theft may help you on your next business trip.

Give yourself plenty of time at the airport. Pack lightly so that you are not overwhelmed by vast amounts of luggage and can keep a close watch on your laptop. Security checkpoints and gates are the two most common places that people lose their computer. Keep careful watch in both of these areas.

Encrypt and back up all of your important files. If you do lose your computer, this will minimize the risk that any confidential company information will be easily accessed by wrong people. With a backup you can quickly rebuild any files and minimize your downtime. Both Windows XP & Vista lets you encrypt folders and files. This is done by right clicking your data, select properties, open the general tab, then the advanced box, and finally check “Encrypt contents to secure data box”.

Another safeguard is to use invisible ultraviolet markings so that any recovered stolen laptops will be clearly identifiable as yours to the police. Storing a copy of your laptop’s serial number somewhere other than your laptop is also a good idea.

Be certain to set up a BIOS Password on your laptop. Although you can easily replace your hardware, your personal data may take months or years to get back so regularly backup your information.

If you do discover that you have lost your laptop, a theft-recovery system like a LoJack for Laptops can help. The system can automatically call in to the Monitoring Center once a day. You can increase the number of calls to the Monitoring Center if your computer is stolen. Your computer can check in with the Monitoring Center and they can initiate a data delete to remove sensitive information before the thief is able to access it.

Dragon Naturally Speaking 10: The Review

Posted by: Ben Janke  :  Category: Software

This time round, the big betterment comes in the quality department. Instead of adding a kajillion new features (cough every interpretation of Microsoft Word pre-2007) or radically revamping its interface (cough Microsoft Word 2007), Nuance tells that lots of its development effort went into promoting Naturally Speaking’s core acknowledgement engine.

The software now makes 20 pct less identification errors”though, since version 9 was already surprisingly right, a 20 percent boost won’t be almost as severe to users as it would have been 5 years ago, when speech identification was just getting into its own.

But the recognition engine wasn’t just tuned to make fewer slips; it was also tuned up to answer more quickly to user input. While edition 9 offers high levels of truth, there would often be a two- or three-second wait while the program decoded your last phrase and spat it onto the screen.

In version 10, Nuance claims to achieve a 50 percent decrease in this kind of latent period. Because reaction time in version 9 was quite an variable, depending on decided software settings, the load on the machine’s CPU, and what was being said at any specific moment, it’s a tough claim to verify. In my own friendly examination, still, it’s clear that version 10 turns words into text with considerably less delay than its precursor.

When a platform costs as much as Naturally Speaking 10, many users will object to the lack of big other features”and there’s a case to be made that Nuance’s own innovation engine is sputtering a bit when it comes to NaturallySpeaking (that case is given at the close of the review). But, after 10 versions, this is a feature-rich software package already.

As a steady user of NaturallySpeaking, I’m more than pleased to see an accent on core functionality at the write down of new characteristics. Besides, many of the program’s characteristics relate to correcting errors. If NaturallySpeaking makes fewer errors to begin with, and is more responsive while running, such features are needed less often and thus seem a bit less key.

The identification engine in edition 10 is nothing short of amazing. You can literally set up the software, pass through a five-minute education process, and start dictating with near-total truth. If you’ve never done it before, the action will likely leave you staring in goggle-eyed question at your screen, sputtering sentence after sentence into your headset in an attempt to learn what the program can’t do.

I’ve been working with NaturallySpeaking for years, so the honeymoon glow faded long ago, to be substituted (as in every marriage) with good affection and the occasional murderous impulse. Why the apoplectic outbursts? Version 9 didn’t hold Vista, for 1 thing, so upgrading to the new OS meant leaving Naturally Speaking behind for several calendar months until Nuance put out a leading patch. The software package just worked with certain variations of Firefox, so after upgrading my web browser, I was forced to use Internet Explorer if I wanted to do some hands-free browsing. At Last, version 9 brought out my Hulk-rage by catching my voice profile, not once but several times”and across dual machines. Finally, after compiling hundreds of megabytes of data under a special Nuance program that would “tune” your profile in exchange for all that wonderful speech data, Nuance never actually bothered to send me the tuned profile. Impressive.

It’s too early to say if version 10 will fare much better on that last count, but in some ways, it hardly matters. Even in version 9, I quickly realized that the best approach was simply to create a new profile; the software was so accurate that “starting from scratch” wasn’t a big deal. With the improved recognition engine in the new version, it appears to be even less of a worry.

How to Get Smtp Outgoing Settings Right for Email Marketing Software

Posted by: Kirill Vasilyev  :  Category: Software

Bob just downloaded a mass mailer from the Internet and he is striving to make his first powerful email campaign. He is happy, he is imagining the moment when the first big buck will start to arrive. He already subscribed for an email mailing list service in a reputable company and composed a fabulous email message template that perfectly fits into the list subject. He presses the send button in a mass mailer and oops, he gets a message that he has to configure smtp settings before he can go on. Bob is confused, why doesn’t this freaking Send button behave as it is supposed to and what the hell do smtp settings mean?

Bob closes the error box and opens smtp settings. He sees a window full of alien words he does not understand. What the hell is smtp host? A french maid or something? Bob is totally confused when he sees smtp port setting. He grabs a telephone book and tries to find a phone number of the port named “Smtp Port”. May be they know how to help. A guy on the other end picks up the phone and recommends Bob to visit his psychiatrist. Sure you wanna know the end of the story, but hey!. It’s just a joke.

In the real life, when it comes to entering smtp settings in an email marketing software, a similar thing usually happens. Most of people got used to user names and passwords but smtp host and smtp port are not fully understood. Although every email provider has a FAQ and help desk where the user can find the full information about his or her smtp settings, nobody seems to pay attention it. Anyway, who wants to read those silly small letters? And, you know, you don’t have to. If you understand the basics, it is not necessary.

Smtp host is not a person. Smtp host is a computer that works as an smtp outgoing mail server. It has an IP address and is normally associated with a domain name. Since this computer can host other services than smtp and even several smtp outgoing services, ports are used. Smtp port is a number from 0 to 65535 that specifies the number of the service you want to work with. It is like office number in an office building. You go to the office 25 in a big building if you want to visit Great Helicopter, Inc. rather than yell loudly in the lobby trying to get attention of somebody in the building.

Smtp host is the most important thing you must know about. There is no standard for smtp host names and usually they are published in email provider’s guides. I recommend you guys to check them out because there is no other source to get this setting from. If you cannot find out what your smtp host is, you can use the following rule of thumb to discover it. If your email address is “bob205@gmail.com”, your smtp host would highly likely be “smtp.gmail.com” or “mail.gmail.com”. Simply add “smtp.” or “mail.” to the domain part of your email address at the beginning (the part that is after the @ symbol). If this does not work for your email address, refer to your email provider’s documentation, FAQ or help desk.

Smtp port is just a number. These numbers have been standardized. Although, smtp port can range between 0 and 65535, it is unlikely that you are going to use something else than 25, 465 or 587. Port 25 is by default the standard port for a regular non-encrypted connection and can also be used with TLS encryption. So you want to try this port with encryption and without it. Port 465 is used with SSL encryption only. Port 587 is normally used with TLS encryption only although it can be used for a regular connections in rare cases. If none of the ports works, refer to your email provider’s documentation, FAQ or help desk.

Smtp encryption secures connection between your computer and SMTP server. Normally, encryption is optional. If you do not use it, you will be forced to use the port 25 only. Since many Internet Service Providers block port 25 for all sorts of reasons, you may end up having to use encryption just to be able to use a different port, let’s say port 465. Port 465 uses SSL encryption. SSL encryption assumes the connection should be encrypted before any traffic takes place (This method is often called “SSL” or “Implicit TLS”). Port 587 assumes you start with an unencrypted connection, use plain words to initiate handshake and then you switch to an encrypted channel after you agree to (The common names of this method are “Start TLS” or “explicit TLS” encryption). Refer to your email provider’s documentation, FAQ or help desk to find out if you need to use encryption and what type it should be.

Smtp authentication is used to check if this is you connecting to smtp server. It is done with the use of user name and password. The only thing I would like to discuss here is the user name format. If your email address is “bob205@gmail.com”, your user name would be your email address “bob205@gmail.com”. However it could be just “bob205″ (the first part of your email address before @). You should try the second variation if the first one does not work. Refer to your email provider’s documentation, FAQ or help desk if none of the variations works.

Getting Started With Alpha Channels And QuickMask Mode In Adobe Photoshop CS4

Posted by: Lewis Rose  :  Category: Software

Your average Photoshop document consists of three colour channels: Red, Green and Blue. However, in addition to the colour channels, Photoshop also uses channels to store information which can be used in the process of selecting and masking different pixels within an image. To distinguish them from colour channels, these channels are normally referred to as alpha channels. Alpha channels are a huge topic in Photoshop but, in this article, we will focus on two techniques which cause alpha channels to be created automatically: the Save Selection command and QuickMask mode.

If you want to work with a given portion of an image, you need to make a selection. Photoshop has a number of tools and techniques for making selections and the time taken will depend on the complexity of the subject. Certain photographic elements, such as hair, are notoriously difficult to select and may take hours. So, having made a selection, it is not unreasonable for the user to want to save the selection for later reuse. The Save Selection command, which is found in the Select menu, is one of the ways of doing this.

The act of saving a selection causes Photoshop to create an alpha channel, prompting the user to enter a suitable name. This channel can be viewed in the Channels window by clicking on its name. Alpha channels are just greyscale images which use a visual code to represent selections: the black areas on the channel represent areas which will not be highlighted when the channel is loaded as a selection and white areas represent those areas which will be highlighted. In fact, the reverse can also be true since the user can set his or her preferences by double-clicking the channel thumbnail in the Channel window. The different tones of grey within an image represent different degrees of selection, making alpha channels suitable for saving selections with fades and feathering.

If you view alpha channels in isolation, they are simply greyscale images. However, it is also useful to look at alpha channels at the same time as the image to which they will be applied. This means that Photoshop needs a way of representing the alpha channel which will not obscure the image. By default, the alpha channel information changes to a red overlay with an opacity of 50%: the user can change both the colour and opacity of the overlay by double-clicking the thumbnail of the alpha channel in the Channels window.

The technique of representing selection and masking as an overlayed colour is also used in Photoshop’s QuickMask mode. To enter QuickMask mode, click on the QuickMask icon on the toolbar or just press the letter “q” on the keyboard. Once in QuickMask mode, all of Photoshop’s paint tools, such as the paintbrush and gradient, can be used to make selections. Selections are represented in pretty much the same way as they are on alpha channels. In fact, if you look at the Channels window when in QuickMask mode, you will notice that Photoshop has created a temporary alpha channel called “QuickMask” which will disappear as soon as you exit QuickMask mode.

A Beautiful Home for Everyone

Posted by: John Sommer  :  Category: External Hard Drives

People nowadays are more conscious of what’s going on in their surroundings. After all, it’s not that easy to miss the endless reports on worsening international relations, rapidly occurring environmental degradation and touchy religious scandals. Whether one likes it or not, it contributes to a very stressful life. This results to people wanting to get away from it all and staying inside their own homes in order to have a quiet time alone.

In order for this reflection in solitude to be effective, it follows that you must have a living space conducive for relaxation. You don’t need to have a large area or expensive furniture and ornaments in order to achieve a nirvana-like state. What is vital is that your abode should fit your personality. Here are some important ways to create a beautiful home that would please your mind and senses.

First, decide on a particular motif. If your home is basically just a box where you lounge and retreat to after a crazy days work, then you might try amplifying the style factor by consulting an interior designer. If such a plan is out of the household budget due to monetary constraints, purchasing and reading home and interior design magazines will also help you in a big way. It will assist you zero in on the theme that you really want.

They have a gallery of pictures that will surely appeal to your discriminating needs. Whether it is a contemporary, Mediterranean, Asian-inspired, American country style or African-theme house that you desire, you will surely find it in the pages of these magazines.

Second, single out a hue that will complement the total look of your home. Do the soothing sounds of the ocean waves calm you? Then, pick a can of paint in aquamarine and make it as your solid backdrop. Should you go in a different route and opt for a shade that reminds you of forests, selecting mint green or moss green will do the task masterfully. Now, if you prefer sticking to cozy colors that reminds you of the earth, get light brown, beige, cream or taupe for a warming effect.

Third, the size of your rooms must be taken into consideration. It is not enough that you just purchase a humongous couch if your living area is just approximately ten square feet in size. They would look out of place and bulky. It also follows that you must use mirrors to create the illusion of a bigger space. Now, if you have a big room, then by all means get a large couch because smaller ones will not be in proportion by then.

Fourth, accessorize with decorative pieces that are colorful and whimsical. They will allow you to indulge in your fantasies and leave the sorry state of the real world for a while. You need not shell out a wad of cash to make this happen. A lot of bargain stores and flea markets sell this kind of stuff because they know there are a lot of potential clients out there. Try going downtown or asking your quirky officemates and friends where they get their unique stuff.

As you have just understood in the aforementioned tips, having a gorgeous dream home can be as easy as ABC.

Web Based Access Security Provides Better Security At A Great Value

Posted by: Terry Stanfield  :  Category: PC Security

Choosing a web based access control system could be the right move for your company, college or facility. There are many costs, often unseen, a conventional access control system suffer over the term of the system. These’unseen’ costs can be quite costly over the long run and using a web-hosted access control system can help lower these costs. Below are a selection of the best cost benefits that may be offered by picking a web-hosted access control system.

1.On-site Server for Software

A dedicated server or PC for hosting the access control system can cost thousands of bucks. This onetime cost coupled with the maintenance of the PC; including upgrades to the operating system, service packs, and hardware repairs ( hard drives, fans, etc ) can cost hundreds or even thousands more. Using a web-hosted access control system solves all of these issues. With web-hosting there’s no on-site server or PC. The database and software are kept at a secure hosting center where all the system upkeep is done by the hosting company. All of these features are offered for a small monthly hosting fee and allows you and IT ( information Technology ) staff to have a tendency to more critical issues.

2. Database backups

Database backups are commonly a tedious task and many times aren’t checked regularly or worse, are not done in any way. For those companies and people that have experienced an access control system crash, they know the amount of time, effort and money that may be involved in getting the system back online . Web-hosted systems offer daily system backups and redundant servers. With these systems, you are warranted that your system will be up and operating when you want it.

3. System Updates

Software upgrades and patches can cost cash and can be terribly time consuming. Upgrades to the access control software might also need you to upgrade or service pack the operating system ; all of these hindrances cost you more time and money. With a web-hosted system, these upgrades and feature enhancements are done immediately with no extra charge to you. There is only the tiny monthly hosting fee that you are in charge of, which provides all of these benefits.

4. Virus protection

Protecting against pathogen, malicious software, and adware could be a frightening task and also a costly one. Since there’s no local server and the panels run an embedded OS, troubling about these kinds of risks becomes a thing of the past. All of the protection is supplied by the hosting company through a secure data center using 128 bit encryption to ensure your absolute protection.

5. Client Licenses & remote access

One of the best advantages of a web-hosted system is there’s no client licensing costs and you are able to use the system from any computer with Internet connection. To log onto your account you simply visit our website and click the web-hosted access control link. You are then brought to a secure log on page where you enter your unique user name and password. From there you have complete control over your access control system. With web-hosting there’s no software to install and it works on Windows, Mac, Citrix and Terminal Server.

My Computer Calamity

Posted by: David Trumble  :  Category: Malware

My wife is the typical grandmother. Everything revolves around her grandchildren and her sewing. She is no PC expert by any means, however, she loves taking digital pictures and emailing them all over the country. One day she was in her second sewing room where she keeps her PC, when she let out this unmistakable cry, David! I knew something was wrong. So I rushed in to find out what was happening. There she was pointing to her computer. Something is wrong.

I just about died. A sudden hollow feeling swelled up inside of me. What is all of that? Can I get rid of that? What If I lose all my business data???? What if my PC completely crashes, then what will I do????

Maybe you have a friend like mine. Without his PC, he is a maniac. The level of upset when our trusty desktop CPUs mess up is overwhelming, but the situation is all too common. One person told me that if it is windows desktop CPU, it is infected with something. He said it is just made that way. I dont know about that, but I have had many friends who about explode when their desktop CPU starts messing up. It seems that when we go on the internet, or get email, or do anything on a desktop CPU; they are exposed to possible infection.

I have read about many kinds of issues like worms, Trojan horses, phishing, adware, spyware, viruses, and malware. Whatever the experts may call them, these pests can really mess up a PC big time. I am told that there are three chief placed where these pests hide: temporary internet files, temporary windows files, and in the operating system itself. To get a desktop CPU running properly means getting rid of the infection.

When my wifes computer messed up, we just stared at each other. We had no clue what to do. So we started by running scans. We tried several programs. All we got was more and more frustrated.

Since we had no answers, we picked up the PC and drove to the store where we bought it. We thought it was under warranty. Sure! We quickly learned the warranty did not apply. The store technician told us it would be two to three weeks and would cost us $300 or more. I thought to myself, We only paid $750.

I later learned that the store where I thought they were going to fix my computer did not actually do the work themselves. That is right. The local store set my desktop CPU on a remote connection to a desktop CPU service center. A technician in Chicago fixed my computer in Texas without ever leaving Chicago. It was all done by remote connection.

The technician explained that remote connection is the wave of the future for computer repair and maintenance. He said as long as a piece of hardware is not actually broken, he could fix most problems faster and easier remotely than a local technician on location.

Convinced? I am. From now on I am going to save money and use remote desktop CPU repair services. I am going to enjoy carefree computing.
